A World Enslaved

Saturday 26 April 08

There are more slaves in the world today than at any time human history.

That is in spite of slavery being banned two hundred years ago.

It is the American journalist and writer E. Benjamin Skinner who says this in his new book “A Crime So Monstrous”.

A Crime so Monstrous

Very few in the industrialized world have any idea of the magnitude of modern slavery that exists in the world today

Over 27 million people worldwide languish in slavery, forced to work under threat of violence, for no pay. In Africa, hundreds of thousands are considered chattel, while on the Indian subcontinent millions languish in generational debt bondage. Across the globe, women and children, sold for sex and labour, are already the second most lucrative commodity for organized crime.

Skinner has travelled all over the world to meet the victims of modern slave trade, and he is chocked by how millions of people are living under conditions that few seem to do something about.

What are your thoughts about 27 million people being slaves in 2008? Is there anything we all can do to stop this? WIMPS Forum
