Away from Violence, South Africa
Monday 09 June 08
Young people from around Cape Town have been working with local community radio organisation Bush Radio, to develop more than 20 projects that address the culture of violence in their communities. This work is being done as part of an international collaborative project called 'Youth Work in Contested Spaces' which is run by Public Achievement, and brings together youth workers from around the world. The project is sponsored by the Community Relations Council under the EU Peace II Programme.
Bush Radio is a partner of Public Achievement, and is a full-time radio station as well as being a vital resource for the communities of the Cape Flats in Cape Town, South Africa. The project culminated in a rally attended by hundreds of young people, and addressed by the Premiere of the Western Cape.
Be sure to check out the other videos from South Africa in the media section of this website. There are 8 films in all showing different aspects of the concerns young people have about the violence they experience from the personal to the local to the global. Also, give us your thoughts on the films in the Forum section of this site - the young people from South Africa will be checking in.
Also check out the Public Achievement website for details of our local work on the 'Away from Violence' project - there are groups around Northern Ireland working on reducing violence in their communities. Perhaps you'd like to get a group going in your area, or to help another group with their project.
