Suicide

In recent weeks there has been a wave of suicides in Dungannon. People fear that there may be further suicides in the town after the deaths of three young people.

Suicide is viewed as a growing problem among teenagers and young people - in particular young men - in Northern Ireland. Statistics show a steadyincrease in suicide among young people during recent years. Why is this?

Several factors are said to contribute to this problem: Loneliness, lack of backup and communication, exposure to violence…  Many argue that suicide is a legacy of our previous conflict, and many young people report pressure from paramilitaries and others in their communities.

Is the legacy of the conflict a key factor in the spate of suicides that have taken place in Northern Ireland during the last years? What other factors do you feel contribute? Do you know someone directly or indirectly involved in this issue?
