  1. Now

Our Goal

After Scotland’s historic vote which included 16 + 17 year olds, let’s push now for the reduction of the voting age here for all future elections.

Why support my campaign?

If you can
- get a job at 16,
- pay tax at 16,
- join the armed forces at 16,
- get married, set up a home at 16
then surely you should be able to vote at 16.

After the recent historic vote in Scotland when 16 +17ear olds played a major role in the vote…for the first time ever in this country…does the government really think that that is the end?

While the Northern Ireland Assembly does not have the power to reduce the voting age here, it should still debate the issue, talk to young people about how we feel about it, and escalate it through legal channels. We need to make sure that in the Westminster election next year and the Northern Ireland Assembly’s election the year after, our voice is heard.

Dear [Politician's name],

I am writing to ask you to support WIMPS campaign to lower the voting age to 16.

In the UK, the age of consent is 16. People can marry at 16. They can join the armed forces and pay taxes at 16.

WIMPS (Where Is My Public Servant?) is campaigning for a debate in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Young people are fellow citizens and we believe they should be consulted on the laws that affect them.

We believe that reducing the voting age would be good for democracy. There is evidence from Europe that young people will participate given the chance. In 1996 in the German city Hanover, for example,
- there was a 56.5% turnout of 16 and 17 year olds.
- 41.1% of the 18 to 24 age group turned out to vote.

I am writing to ask you to support our campaign for a debate which we hope will lead to people voting from the age of 16.

You can show your support by signing into our campaign page at http://wimps.org.uk/campaigns/votes-at-16/ and clicking on the “Back This” button.

Thank you
