Get the government to debate and take action on the extensive teaching of Evolution in all schools in Northern Ireland
Why support my campaign?
Here in Northern Ireland, we are educated in several systems. We have the integrated schools, segregated schools and of course schools based on religious teachings. But no matter how we structure our school system, children should not be sheltered from facts.
We, the scientifically minded in Northern Ireland feel that in schools of all kinds of both primary and secondary, children are not being taught the full and complete subject of Evolutionary Science. We want all children to have access to all the facts of life. We also believe that if the fact of the evolution of life on planet Earth is taught in full context we will also see how children and young people can come together as a society if the facts are told to all.
The teaching of Evolution in education at the moment is so scattered and almost taboo in this country that children do not take in the facts that they are told and even then they are taught to believe there is even a debate anymore of the origins of life. That is why we must focus our resources on teaching one single truth that is Evolution. We must discard religion on this subject and simply teach the facts to our children.
We live in a very segregated society in Northern Ireland. This is the result of our terrible past. But we believe that the teaching of this subject could be used as an element to bring people together. If we decided to teach all of our children in all NI schools, these facts of life and where they came from then we believe that this could be used to bring people together. If many children accept the fact of their origin then it will teach them to deal kindly with one another. It will teach them the fragility of the human experience and will in the future bring our country and eventually our race of people together.

The National Trust Responds to Letter on The Causeway Centre and The Caleb Foundation
Posted on July 26th, 2012
ARTICLE FROM ATHEISM: NERTHERN IRELAND WEBSITE
When the news broke that the The Caleb Foundation, the Northern Ireland Evangelist group that lobby the Government to push Christian beliefs, had corrupted the new Giants Causeway Visitors Center, the response was swift and merciless. Most simply wanted to know – why?
Speaking on behalf of Caleb, its Chairman Wallace Thompson was quoted as saying:
As an umbrella organisation which represents the interests of mainstream evangelical Christians in Northern Ireland,we have worked closely with the National Trust over many months with a view to ensuring that the new Causeway Visitor Centre includes an acknowledgement both of the legitimacy of the creationist position on the origins of the unique Causeway stones and of the ongoing debate around this. We are pleased that the National Trust worked positively with us and that this has now been included at the new Visitor Centre
You can see the full Caleb statement on their website here.
[EDITORS NOTE: Since we have published this, Caleb have since included a ‘creationist issues’ section on their website, which boasts the usual array of creationist babble about how their views should be treated with equality and respect. The usual buzzwords such as ‘inclusivness’ and ‘alternative debate’ are in abundance]
We emailed the Trust to see their response on the matter, to ask how closely they actually worked with the Foundation, and to judge the reliability of Thompsons claims.
The response was clear, and concise. There are a number of statements that stand out, which prove that Celeb’s statement is not only greatly exaggerated in its worth, but mostly nonsense.
“There is no creationist interpretation and no alternative theories as to the formation of the Causeway”
“We did not accept requests to include details of creationist beliefs or alternative theories as to the formation of the Giants Causeway in response to Caleb”
“Science has since conclusively proven that the Causeway is around 60 million years old and this is what we state across all of our interpretation”
This exposes Caleb for what they really are. Propaganda pushers, liars and men of the cloth that act within the underbelly of Northern Ireland politics to push Christian beliefs. They do not adhere, or care, about science or accuracy of fact and be it a museum or a natural formation – no institution is off-limits.
We will also be emailing Caleb and will hopefully be able to post their side of the story in the coming week.
Here is the email transcript from the National Trust in full:
Thank you for your e-mail in relation to interpretation at the new Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre.
We would like to stress that all of the information presented to visitors in relation to how the Giant’s Causeway was formed, and how old it is, clearly reflects the science, i.e. that the Causeway stones are 60 million years old. This is reflected in the visitor centre, the audio trails which visitors use to explore the Causeway stones, and in all the literature provided both before and during the visit.
There is no creationist interpretation and no alternative theories as to the formation of the Causeway are presented.
This is a stunning state of the art interpretation centre with over 50 exhibits and interactive displays and two hours of audio trails. One of the exhibits in the Visitor Centre interpretation tells the story of the part the Giant’s Causeway played in the historical debate which took place about how the earth’s rocks were formed and about the age of the earth. This is an interactive installation in which by pressing buttons visitors can hear a flavour of some of the different debates from historical characters over centuries. In the context of this exhibit listeners hear a statement that for some people this debate continues today and that Creationists have a different understanding from that of science. We do not explain, justify or support that view.
Caleb is an organisation which expressed interest in our plans for the Visitor Centre interpretation. We met with them and discussed our plans for the interpretation. Other individuals during the consultation process, and visitors to the site, also requested the inclusion of a creationist position (during our public meetings).
We did not accept requests to include details of creationist beliefs or alternative theories as to the formation of the Giant’s Causeway in response to requests from Caleb or others. As we describe above, in one exhibit we merely reflect in one statement the fact that this perspective exists.
Through our research we established that at various stages over centuries the Causeway became involved in debates about the age of the earth as it was being revealed by science. These debates took place in a context in which the prevailing understanding of the age of the earth was based on a particular interpretation of the Bible. Other religious beliefs do not have a similar historical connection to the Causeway. Science has since conclusively proven that the Causeway is around 60 million years old and this is what we state across all of our interpretation.
We hope that you will have the opportunity to come to the Giant’s Causeway, enjoy the visitor centre and see the interpretation in its entirety. The Centre, which opened on 3rd July, is receiving great feedback from visitors.
